Another one from the D

Ok I'm actually clearing out the folder that has been sitting on my desktop and making room on my computer, finally.  One more post from the 'archive', before they're all moved to the external and never heard from again.  This is a job I shot for USA Today back in Detroit.  This guy, Delvon Roe, was a starting forward for MSU's basketball team, and was also a theater major with a role in the theater department's production of Shakespeare's 'As You Like It'.  This was no small task, since both roles are incredibly demanding.  After opening night he changed and went straight to a game.  I can't seem to find the pdf of how it looked when it ran, but here's a couple images from the shoot.

Getting his Sparty tattoo covered.  I guess Shakespeare wouldn't approve of the little green man.

Fashion Week Detroit

I'm cleaning off the hard drive, and I figured I'd post a few from old jobs before I move them off and never ever get back to them.  I got to shoot Detroit Fashion Week for the Detroit Free Press when I was in Detroit.  It was definitely fun and a change of pace.  It would have been cool to really spend some time there, but deadlines were crazy tight and I only had about an hour to shoot and get everything turned in.

San Francisco Opera for The Star-Ledger

I got to work for my old friends at The Star-Ledger in Jersey over the past couple weeks for a 9/11 anniversary story.  The San Francisco Opera premiered an opera based on the story of a 9/11 hero from Jersey.  Rick Rescorla lost his life on 9/11 after he led thousands to safety out of the WTC.  The guy was a character, he sang for everyone to calm them down as he made sure they got out safely.  Then he went back in to do one last sweep, and never came out.  He was a security guard in the towers, and had warned they were susceptible to an attack.  The opera, "Heart of a Soldier", tells the story of his life, from wanting to be a soldier as a child, to fighting in Vietnam, to the meeting of his wife, now widow.  I don't know much about opera, but I'm sure this is nothing like the average subject matter.  It's a true story, for one, with a very modern set, and a love story set way later in life.  It was extremely intense to watch, and even more so when I went back and looked at the video after I shot it.  I got to shoot one of their rehearsals, then one of their dress rehearsals at the opera house minus the orchestra.  Watching the video now and hearing soprano Melody Moore, who plays his widow, gives me chills.  It ended up running on A1 on 9/10/11.  Here's a couple of photos from the shoot, and a link to the story and a couple short videos here and here from the Ledger's website.

San Francisco Chronicle Magazine

The San Francisco Chronicle Magazine fall home edition came out on Sunday, and a photo I shot actually got the cover.  The assignment gave me the opportunity to really work with lighting, and in some cases construct sets, on a couple shoots at design shops in the city.  I've been trying to learn more lighting.  This year I went to the flashbus workshop with The Strobist, and Joe McNally, which gave me more schooling in a day than I had all year.  I still have much to learn, but, it's cool to finally be getting more comfortable with lights.  And, these were fun shoots to do - I would love to furnish my place with stuff from these guys' shops.  There's a link to the online gallery here, a couple more shots, and a couple of shots from how it looked in print.
